Waco Roofing Tip of the Month: Simple Fascia Board DIY Repair Tips

One of the most common components of our house that are prone to rotting would be the fascia board. The placement of the fascia board made them highly vulnerable against water damages. Once the wood has been soaked in the water frequently, it will not take too long before deterioration will ensue. In this article, we will provide you some tips in repairing the fascia.

5 Tips for the DIYers when Repairing their Fascia

Before you start with your task, be sure to prepare all the necessary materials first. This can greatly streamline the whole process. Some of the tools that you may need include ladder to reach the high places, tape measure, painter's tool, utility knife, nail puller, etc.

1. How to Determine If Your Fascia is Deteriorating

Before you even start in dismantling your fascia, you need to know if it is badly damage first. Rotting and stain or discoloration can be two different issues. There are some cases that the spillover in your gutter can simply gunk up on this section. When the board is rotting, you will notice a dark cavity and soft parts. Rotting wood will be pulpy and mushy. Test the core of the wood before you start repairing your fascia.

2. Determine the Source of Water

To make sure that the repair will be successful and the newly-installed fascia will not immediately deteriorate, you will have to determine the source of the water. You will then have to prevent the water from being continuously soaked. Damaged and chipped shingle would be the usual water source that will reach your fascia. Your gutter can also be the source of your problem.

3. Removing the Rotten Fascia

Removing the fascia may be a struggle if you don't know how to properly do it. To start, pick up your utility knife and use it to cut the caulk lines and seams on the fascia that needs replacement. This will help you prevent from pulling the other component that is not included in your repair.

4. Checking the Subfascia

Once you successfully remove the fascia, it is time to check the condition of the subfascia. In case the lumber has been damaged badly, you will have to remove it first. Add some scab blocks to the frame of your roof structure. Be sure that anything that you will add will be immobile and firmly attached. If it is still in good shape, you can simply clean it.

5. Caulking the New Fascia

Caulking the fascia may appear to be a simple and direct process. You simply have to cut the tube and allow the caulk to flow. However, there are still some things that you need to remember. For instance, be sure that you are using the silicon latex type that is ideal for external application.

The repairing process may greatly vary. For instance, the different types of fascia may require different process. There are also instances when you will be compelled to replace the soffit as well.
