Vancouver Roofing Tip of the Month: 5 Questions You Should Ask Your Roofing Contractor

If you are a homeowner, it is likely that at some point in your life you are going to need to hire a contractor to do a repair or some kind of other work on your roof. Maybe it is even to replace the roof altogether.

For most, they have no idea of exactly what to look for in a contractor. Since they don't normally deal with roof contractors, knowing what to ask escapes them. If you find yourself in the situation, here are five common questions you should ask any person before deciding to allow them to do repairs or replace your roof.

Do You Have a Place of Business?

Many homeowners have been swindled by people who travel around in the truck an offer to provide roofing services. They have a logo on their truck, say all the right things, but don't actually have a physical location whether business is located. This is not the kind of contractor you should hire, no matter what kind of work they will do for you.

Always hire someone with an established business. If they don't have a physical location that you could go to so that you could ask questions or talk to someone, they are not right for you.

Do You Have Insurance?

All contractors should be bonded with some kind of insurance policy. This lets you know that if some problem arises in the future that you are going to be covered. Maybe they don't finish the job or don't do it right. Being covered by an insurance policy will ensure that you receive your money back should there be an issue.

Do You Have a License?

Every good contractor should have a license. Whether that is true some governmental agency or through some kind of business group within the area, they should have one.

You should also be able to pull up their license. For example, if they are licensed through some kind of Guild related to roofing, you should be able to contact that agency and see if they truly have a license and if they are in good standing. Any contractor who is any good should be willing to provide you with this information.

Do You Offer a Warranty?

What is the number one way to ensure that the person doing the work on your roof is going to do a good job? A warranty.

Any person who stands behind their work and guarantees that they will fix, replace, or repair any problem for at least five years is worth hiring.

Do You Have References?

References are an extremely important part of hiring any contractor. You should be able to talk to people or visit homes where they have done work. Truthfully, you have no idea whether this person is good or not. Being able to talk to some who have use their services is your way of finding out whether you can legitimately trust them.

Most don't like to be this forward, but your home is the biggest investment you will ever make. It pays for you to be vigilant and assertive about anyone you hired to do work on or around your home.
