Saint Paul Roofing Tip of the Month: Complete Guide on Wood Shakes and Shingles

Wood shingles and shakes can be manufactured from redwood, pine, cypress, and red cedar trees. The shakes will be split from the logs. The manufacturers will then reshape the wood for commercial purposes. Shakes will appear thicker on its butt end compared to the shingles. Wood shake and shingles used to represent the standard types of shingles but today, people are opting for asphalt shingles since they are more affordable. Some homeowners prefer this wood materials due to their aesthetically pleasing feature.

Wood Shingles and Shakes

Shingles and shakes are two different components. The shingles are usually sawn while shakes can be sawn, split, or split and sawn contingent upon the grade of shakes that you prefer. The initial coverage will highly rely upon the application process, roof slope, appearance, pattern, and the materials used. These factors can also affect the durability of your roof. It is quite difficult to determine the longevity of your roof since it depends upon the quality of the roof, your location, and the direct exposure to the elements that may cause weathering.

Maintenance of Wood Shakes and Shingles

If your wood is made from wood materials, good housekeeping calls for the need to eliminate all the leaf litter and debris that piled up on your roof overtime. It is recommended to start the cleaning process after the fall season or before the onset of winter or rainy season. The debris can contribute to the deterioration of the roof. The debris will hamper the appropriate flow of water. This can lead to the rotting of the wood materials.

Flashing and Fastener

The wood roofing can be attached to the roof deck with a stainless steel or galvanized steel nails or fastener. Metal staples can also be used to connect wood roofing but be sure that it will be the non-corroding type. You need to use at least two fasteners to keep the wood firmly attached. Look for a nail that will be long enough to pierce through the multiple layers of the roof. The nail should also extend on the underside of your roof deck.

With regards to the flashing of the wood materials, it can be separated into four different types.

- Perimeter-Edge Metals- Depends upon the climate in your area, cycle of freeze thaw, severe weather condition, and torrential rainfall, you should consider using this.
- Penetrations- Our pipes and exhaust vent will be flashed on our roofing system using a flat flange. This component extends through the penetration and will be installed below the shingles.
- Valleys- This is also referred to as open valley. This will be surrounded with a sheet metal.
- Vertical Surface- When you roofing system employs a vertical surface, you may use counterflashing, cricket, step, and apron.

When you are planning to install a new roofing structure, you should first consider the warranty that the roofing contractor will provide. There are different types of warranties and you need to consider them all. Talk to your roofer that will walk you through the different things related with wood shingles and shakes.
