Raleigh Roofing Tip of the Month: Choosing between Metal and Plastic Guttering

If your house does not have an appropriate guttering system, understand that your house will be vulnerable to different problems such as water damages. The integrity of our foundation and interior can be compromised if we do not appropriately install and maintain our gutter. However, the different materials accessible in the market today can overwhelm the common homeowners. To make an informed choice, you need to be aware on the different matters related with metal and plastic guttering.

Comparison of Metal and Plastic Guttering

Metal and plastic are the two more popular choice materials for gutters. They have differences that you must consider in order to choose the material that is best suited for your situation and needs.

Cost

The price of the material is always the first factor that most homeowners will consider. It is expected that the metals will be more expensive than the PVC and vinyl. The aluminum gutter is around $2-$4/linear foot. Seamless type will be more expensive that will cost at about $5-$11. Expect to pay at least $6 when you choose steel as your material for your gutter. For the vinyl the cost will only be about $1-$2/linear foot. Expect that the cost mentioned above can increase depending on the cost of hiring a professional roofing contractor.

Color

The metal and plastic guttering is available in a range of color. The PVC pipe are commonly available in white, grey, brown, and black. This provides them the same appearance as the cast iron. Metal guttering is available in different finishes such as galvanized, white, copper effect, graphite grey, and black.

Ease-of-Installation

While most of the professional roofer will be proficient in the installation of the plastic gutter, the installation is quite similar with the metal gutter. Most homeowner who are confident in completing a DIY project can complete this on their own. You only need to prepare the basic tools and you are good to go. Nonetheless, there are still materials especially steel that requires joiners.

Durability

PVC and metal are known for their durability. They will last long but you still needed to pay attention to the warranty that the manufacturer will provide. The reputable supplier can provide you at least 10-year guarantee for their PVC gutter. For the metal gutters, the manufacturer should provide you at least 35 years guarantee.

Sizes and Shapes

The plastic gutter will be available in deep flow, square, and half-round profile. It comes in similar sizes ranging from 110-115mm with a depth of 50mm-80mm. The steel gutters are mostly half-rounded, and it comes with a bead on its top edge. The average size is slightly bigger compared to the size of the plastic guttering. The depth will expectedly be deeper.

Both materials will require low level of maintenance. You only need to clear the debris, twigs, and leaves several times per year to ensure that the water will be properly diverted away from our foundation. The best material for your situation will be different and will depend upon your unique goal and needs.
