Portland Roofing Tip of the Month: Can We Have A Roof Leak When We Only Have a Single Missing Shingles

In case you have experienced a severe weather disturbance, it will not be rare for you to encounter a missing shingle in your roof. You are perhaps wondering if this can result to a roof leak. Usually, this missing shingle would be a 3-tab shingle. When this tab is removed the layer below will be exposed to different outdoor elements.

Missing Shingles Will Not Immediately Result to Roof Leaks

While missing shingle will not be a good situation since the water can penetrate the seam, it will not immediately lead to roof leak. This is thanks to the underlayment found below the shingles that serves as an extra protection. This will give you enough time to repair your roof and replace the missing shingles. There are different damages that can be caused by roof leaks. Here are some of them.

Ceiling and Attic Damages

If there is a leaking roof, our ceiling and attic would be the first casualty. You will need to address the problem immediately especially if you are using your attic as your storage space. When the water managed to access our attic, it will not take too long before you notice signs of serious damages. Stains and mold will start to appear. The areas that are painted will darken and wood furniture will rot. The water that enters the roof vent can lead to problem in your ventilation.

Mildew and Mold Buildup

One of the reasons why you need to address roof leaks at once would be the possibility that the mold and mildew will develop. The roof leaking will create the perfect place for the mold to thrive. The mold can decompose a range of materials and may lead to health issues and risks. If the mold has started to develop, it is also possible for the black mold to grow. This require a complex cleaning procedure for your drywall, carpet, and curtain. Black mold is known to be neurotoxic and eliminating them can be costly.

Structural Damage

Roof leak can also affect your structure. For instance, exposure to the high-level of moisture can damage your rafter, fascia board, joist, and framing. The damage will become serious once the water leak on the frame of your house. It can lead to sagging for the crucial part of the house. The wood will also be warped and will cause misalignment. If you choose to ignore the problem, structural damage will soon happen. Expect that the cost of the repair will also increase.

Electrical and Fire Risks

You may not be aware of it, but the roof leak can also increase the electrical and fire hazard. We all know that water and electricity will not complement each other. Once the electricity come in contact with water, it can cause accidental electrocution, or it can lead to fire.

There are different reasons why shingles will be displaced or will go missing. Without a shingle, it will not take too long before the underlayment will be damaged that will lead to roof leaks. The number of missing shingles will not be the determining factor that will help you identify the presence of roof leaks.
