Olympia Roofing Tip of the Month: 6 Problems With Your Shingles That You'll Need to Keep Your Eyes Open For

Sadly, there are many instances where a problem with the roof was detected by the homeowner long before a serious problem occurred. They had noticed something that seemed odd, but didn't do enough about it or didn't worry enough about it, leading to a serious problem later on.

This is a lot more common than you may think, and is why it is important to keep your eyes open for potential problems with the shingles of your home. Here are six things you should look for.

Moss

Moss is one of the leading problems for those who have wood shingles. The reason is that Moss are just like sponges. They absorb water, which could mean that your shingles underneath are having an increased amount of water on them continuously. This will lead to the roofing material rotting and becoming compromised.

Cracks

This seems obvious, but far too few people make enough about cracks or breaks in the shingles themselves. If you notice that a shingle is broken, cracked, or looking like it may be about to fall apart, you have a problem. You may need to replace that shingle or group of shingles.

Shedding

You may not think that a shingle actually sheds, but it does. This is especially true in shingles made of materials like asphalt. What happens is the granules begin to erode over time, which compromises the integrity of the shingle. With continual shedding, the shingle will begin to fall apart, opening a gap where water, bugs, or other potential problems could damage your home. Watch to see if you notice that the shingle starts to have a different appearance, where the granules look like they are disappearing or eroding.

Gutters

If you start to notice problems with your gutters, you may have issues with your shingles. The most common of these instances is where you noticed that the gutters are beginning to sag or pull away from your home. This is a problem for the shingles, because if an area of the gutter dislodges it can pull out the shingle or the roofing material underneath it, opening an area that could create for a leak or other problem.

Curling and Blistering

With some kinds of roofing materials, you may notice that the tiles will begin to curl or blister in spots on the shingle. These are weak spots which open spots for huge problems for your home. Curling of the shingle will mean that there is a gap that is exposed to the elements. Blistering means that there is a weakening of a small spot on the shingle itself. This can instantly become a problem if you have large hail or if an animal starts to dig at that blistering spot.

Raised Shingles

Like curling, you may find a spot where the shingles are raised up so they are not flat against the roof. This can be caused by a number of problems, but they are quite visible to you even looking up from your yard onto the roof. You should be able to see gaps where the shingle is elevated, which means that you have an issue.

Look around for these kind of problems on your roof. You probably spend a lot of time out in your yard mowing the lawn, sitting around talking with your spouse, or just enjoying a day laying out in the sun. While you're doing this, take a look at your roof to see if any of these problems exist. You'll be glad you did.
