Newark Roofing Tip of the Month: How Many Missing Shingles Cause a Leaking Roof?

This sounds like it would be the opening to a joke. Like, "How many Psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?" Answer: "None, the bulb will change when it is ready."

That may be a funny joke to tell at a party, but is another thing altogether when you notice that there are shingles that are missing from your roof. This may cause you to wonder how many shingles does it take before leak can form through your roof?

Let`s understand that shingles can blow away during some violent storms. If you have had strong winds or heavy rains, you may have gone out the next morning and have seen that there are some shingles that are missing. This is a very common occurrence, especially in areas where winds can exceed 70 miles an hour.

This kind of gust can be a real challenge for the material holding your shingles in place, especially if you have an aging roof. Over time, the strength of the glue or whatever material is being used to bind your shingles to the roof can weaken. This makes it a whole lot easier for those shingles to be blown away during a violent storm.

But can that really cause a leak? If you`re missing just one or two shingles is there really cause for concern? The answer, sadly, is yes. However, the answer is a little more complicated than just that.

The problem is not necessarily that shingles are missing. It is where those shingles were located, even if there is just one. If this particular shingle was placed directly above a seam in your roof, then you can be sure that a leak is likely. The same is the area where two boards are coming together, and those shingles are there to protect from water leaking through the seam and into your home.

This is where your problem arises. Seems that are exposed directly to the elements or that are exposed to water that can drain down your roof and in through the same create a number of problems for your home. These shingles are essential because they are keeping water out of this critical area.

In that case, it doesn`t matter whether one or 50 shingles is missing. If there is a gap over the top of a seam you`ve got a problem.

If you notice that there is a missing shingle or more than one, it is important that you go out and inspect that area immediately. If you run your hand across the area where the shingle is missing you should be able to feel if a seam is located there. If you can, you need to replace that shingle right away.

Understand that failing to do so will allow water to creep into your attic or into the walls of your home. Over time, this can lead to mold and mildew building up within your home or to damage to the foundation. In either case, that is a risk you cannot afford to allow.
