Kansas City Roofing Tip of the Month: Signs of Clogged Gutter

You may not be aware that something as simple as gutter can have a significant impact towards your home. It should be noted that any fault in the structure of the gutter can wreak a significant havoc on your house. Once the gutter become clogged, the water will not be appropriately diverted away from your house. Therefore, it can spill on each side of your gutter that can cause different issues.

5 Signs of Clogged Gutter

Some of the issues that can be caused by the clogged gutter include structural damage, foundation issues, flooding on the basement, and the build-up of mold and mildew. All these can be expensive to repair and may pose some risks towards your safety and health. To avoid this, you need to check your gutter periodically.

1. Presence of Pests and Birds

Once you noticed that your roof is harboring pests, rodents, and birds, inspect your gutter and check if there are leaves, twigs, and debris that are clogged in your gutter. Most birds will find the hollowed part of the gutter an appropriate place to establish their nest. Since the place is frequently moist, it can also draw the attention of different pests. It will not be impossible for you to encounter possums, squirrels, rats, mice and even snakes when you have a clogged gutter.

2. Spilling Water

If the water began spilling on the sides of the gutter, this is an indication that the water is not flowing properly. This obstruction will force the water over the sides of your gutter. This can result to an expensive water damage on your property. For instance, the water that is diverted on the side of the rain gutter can cause basement flooding especially during torrential rain.

3. Sagging Gutters

The buildup of debris in your gutter can increase the weight that the gutter needs to hold. Most gutters are simply attach using screws or fastener. They are designed to carry the weight of the water and not the accumulated leaves, and debris. In addition, these obstructions can corrode the materials that can also lead to sagging. Once your gutter is in this condition, it cannot properly divert the water away from our property.

4. Stains

Just like the water stains in your ceiling can be a sign of roof leaks, stains on the side of the gutter is an indication of clogged gutter. Once the rain water becomes stagnant, it may damage our fascia board found at the back of the gutter. Our shingles may not be spared from the damage.

5. Plant Growth

Try to look up and notice if a small garden is starting to manifest in your garden. This is an undeniable sign that the flow of water is impeded. Apart from the debris and leaves, seeds can also end up in your gutter. The constant moist areas can also encourage the growth of moss.

Once you noticed these signs, this is an indication that your gutter requires an immediate cleaning. Be sure to check the condition of your gutter every season to avoid costly repairs.
