Kalamazoo Roofing Tip of the Month: 4 Simple Roof Maintenance Tips That Will Help to Extend Its Life

Have you ever considered that often times it is the simplest things that do the most amount of good? It is changing your oil on a regular basis that helps to extend the life of your car for another 50,000 miles. It is properly sealing your food before placing it into the freezer that helps it from getting freezer burned. It is taking that extra couple of minutes now that saves you a large amount of money later on.

The same is true with your roof. By doing the small projects to maintain your roof, you can extend its lifespan by at least five years, maybe even 10. This can save you $10,000 or more depending on how long you own your home. Here are four such tips you should consider that will help you to extend the life of your roof.

Clean the Gutters

While the gutters don't seem like they directly impact of the roof, the truth is that they do. When gutters are clogged, it can mean that the extra weight caused by water being allowed to pool will begin to force the gutters away from the roof. This can cause damage as the clasps and screws that hold the gutter in place are ripped from the roof. In addition, standing water can build up until it is building a pool that includes the lower shingles. This can cause those shingles to warp, rot, or suffer some other form of damage.

To prevent this, you need to clean your gutters on a regular basis. At least twice a year this should be done. Remove all debris, ensure that joints and clasps are properly fitted, and ensure that the gutter is securely fastened to your home as it was intended.

Remove Branches

We often hear stories of how huge trees smashed through the roof of a person's home during a serious storm, but the reality is that it is smaller branches that do the most amount of damage to a person's home over time. You should ensure that no branches or bushes come within 8 feet of your roof. This not only helps to keep small animals away, but will keep branches from scraping or scratching at your roof, causing damage.

Ventilate

The proper amount of ventilation will help to keep the air inside the attic cool. Warm, humid air will be forced out through the vent, which will help to reduce moisture. Problems with your roof can actually begin inside your home, so ensuring that the proper amount of ventilation is available in the attic will greatly reduce potential risks.

Inspect

You should inspect your roof at least twice a year. It is a good idea to have a professional do it at least one of those times but, if that is not a possibility, then you need to spend some time in the fall and in the spring going out and looking over your roof thoroughly. Talk to a professional about what kinds of things to look for so that you can spot potential problems.

As you can see, doing the simplest things can make a dramatic difference. This is why it is important that you take the time to properly care for your roof.
