Huntsville Roofing Tip of the Month: 5 DIY Fascia Repair Tips You Should Read

There are many parts of your roof that you need to regularly inspected to ensure that there is no damage that can compromise your home. The fascia is one such area.

These boards not only provide an aesthetic look for your home, but also play an important role in the maintaining and integrity of your shingles, and are often used to hold your gutters in place. If they are damaged in any way, it can create a real problem for your home. Should you notice that there are problems with the fascia here are five of the more common do-it-yourself repair projects you can do on your own.

Broken Boards

You may have an instance where a board is broken. This can be replaced as you would any other board. Once you find a board that is the same size as the piece of fascia that you are replacing, you simply cut it to fit, painted the same color, then caulk it to ensure that is sealed in place. You want to make sure that no seams or joints are exposed that can enable water to seep into your home. If gutters were attached to the broken piece, secure your gutters to the new piece you have used to replace the previous piece of fascia.

Missing Board

During a heavy storm, you may find that a board was completely knocked away from the roof. This will require you to replace that area. If there is a portion of the board that remains, you will need to remove that first before installing the new piece. Choose a board that is identical size in terms of width, and paint to fit the look of your home.

Broken Gutter Connection

You may have an instance where the bolt or bracket that holds your gutter against the fascia has broken. You may even find where the hole in the fascia where the gutter was attached is cracked. This should not require you to completely replace the fascia board, but you will probably have to play some caulk in the area where the bolt was held. This will help to secure the bolt in place of the gutter will not come loose nor will any water seeping through the place where the bolt is attached.

Leak

It is not surprising that over time seals around your fascia boards may deteriorate. This can allow water to leak into your home, which can be extremely dangerous to the integrity of your house. Not only can it lead to mold and mildew, but it can lead to rotting that can put your home in danger.

The best thing to do is to get yourself a good caulk to use to place around the area where the seal is breached. Use a leveler to keep it flush with the board, and ensure that the caulk completely fills any open area.

Fading

If the fascia boards begin to fade, it can take away from the look of your home. A simple repainting job may do the trick for you, but you may also find that the look has been diminished by dirt. A good power wash could do the job as well.
