Fort Worth Roofing Tip of the Month: A Simple Guide to Concrete or Clay Roof Tiles

A clay or concrete roof can look unbelievably sharp, especially in areas where there is a more rustic look, like the Southwestern United States. These kinds of tiles can give a very distinguished looking appearance to your home or business. Surprisingly, the style first began when the Dutch and other European immigrants came to this world back in about 1650, but has spread across the country and has become most prominent in states like Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Why Clay, Concrete Roof Tiles?

There are two primary reasons why a person would choose this style of tile. It starts with the fact that they are extremely sharp looking. Made to look good, and quite durable, you can be sure that these tiles will be on your roof for decades without you having to replace them. They can withstand heavy winds and hail, and are specifically suited for the hot weather. This means that excessive heat, even above 120 degrees will have no effect on these tiles at all.

Because of the material used to create the tiles, you also reap the benefits of them keeping your house a lot cooler. These tiles do not absorb heat, and actually reflect it away. This helps to keep your house a lot cooler in the summer time, which is a primary reason why they are used quite often in areas where the heat can be suffocating.

Why Not Clay, Concrete Roof Tiles?

The reason for this is quite obvious. These tiles are quite expensive, not only because of the materials that are used, but because it requires a much more experienced and well-trained roofer to install this in the average home. To get the right look into ensure that they properly seal so that there are no potential weak spots, you need someone who really knows what they are doing.

Cost is also a big factor, but a major factor to consider would be the amount of weight these tiles put on the frame of your home. Not every home is able to handle how heavy these tiles can be, especially if you have a large roof. You have to worry about how much area is covered, and whether the design of the house is built in such a way that it can handle the weight these tiles inflict upon your home.

The Joy of Maintenance

Another reason why they have become so popular is because of how easy they are to clean. All you really need to do is spray them with a garden hose and most of your work is done.

It does pay to inspection on your tiles. You do want to look for spots where a tile may have slipped out of its spot or where excessive amounts of debris, such as twigs and leaves have accumulated. You also want to watch for spots where bugs or small rodents may have built a little nest within the tiles of your home.

Unfortunately, there have been instances where bees have built a hive here within the tiles, but it is not an extremely common occurrence. However, it still pays to check.

This is a great choice for your roof, especially if you are living in an area where you are trying to reduce the amount of heat in your home. If you can afford the cost, you will love the look.
