Annapolis Roofing Tip of the Month: Steps to Clean the Clogged Gutters

Our roof gutter is an important part of the entire roofing system. Without it, the water will not be diverted away from our house that can lead to a variety of issues such as water damages, problems on foundation, flooding, etc. It also ensures that our fascia and wood materials will not experience premature damage. However, as time passes by, our gutters can be clogged with debris. Cleaning to ensure that the water will flow appropriately is very important.

4 Steps in Cleaning a Clogged Gutter

Start by preparing all the materials and tools that you will need. A ladder will be an indispensable tool since you will need to reach the gutter. Prepare a plastic bucket that comes with a handler, and a leaf scooper. To blast the debris, a garden hose may also be necessary.

1. Dry vs. Damp Gutter

Cleaning the gutter will be a messy job. Not a lot of people will be elated in doing this task. If the gutter is dry, the cleaning process will be less messy. However, there are instances when you will be required to clean the gutter while it is moist. When the gutter is wet, you may simply use the technique known as scoop-and-drop. You simply scoop the materials on the gutter and drop it inside the plastic bucket. If the gutter is dry, removing the sticks and leaves will be less strenuous. Make sure that you will not completely fill the plastic bags since it will be challenging for you to carry the bucket down the ladder.

2. Cleaning the Gutter

Once you have decided the method that you are going to employ, it is time to start the cleaning process. Different tools can be used in scooping the dirt in your gutter. After that, simply throw everything inside the bucket. Avoid overreaching and work only in a small section of the roof before moving the ladder to another section. Keep you body in a proper posture and never lean away from your ladder. Your safety is tantamount when cleaning your gutter.

3. Cleaning Your Downspout

After you successfully eliminated the debris in your gutter, it is time to shift your attention to the downspout. Use a hose to clear the materials inside the downspout. You need to make sure that the right amount of pressure will be applied to expel the trapped materials. Once you removed the clogging, check the flow by simply running some water in it.

4. Rinsing and Repeating

Once the dirt has been cleaned, you will need to rinse the structure by flushing the remaining debris. Simply place the garden hose at the further end of the gutter and allow the water to flow. Let this proceed for a couple of minutes before checking the gutter again. In case there are still some debris, repeat the procedure until all materials have been expelled.

Regular maintenance of your gutter is necessary to ensure that the water will be properly diverted away from the house. This can help us avoid a wide range of issues and can help us preserve the condition of the house.
