Amarillo Roofing Tip of the Month: DIY Fascia Repair Tips

Our fascia boards are fragile and vulnerable to damages. They are often exposed to weather and environmental elements that can compromise their integrity. Fortunately, any damages can be repaired by individuals who love DIY projects. In case your fascia board is made from wood, the tips that we will mention below can help you increase the quality of the result.

5 Repair Tips for Your Fascia Board

Fascia is the component of our roof where the gutter will be attached. As such, it is vulnerable to water damages. Nonetheless, you need to make sure that it will last long. You can look for wood materials that have high resistance against decay. Once the materials acquired damages, you will need to conduct simple repairs to avoid the situation from getting worse.

1. Choosing the Best Material

In case you must replace or repair a part of your fascia board that is in state of deterioration, do not settle for low quality materials. Look for an excellent and decay-resistant type of wood. Therefore, you will have to choose a fascia board that has been made from the heartwood of cypress or cedar. It can also mean that you will have to choose a material that comes with grain structures. Make sure that it has a low possibility to split, warp, and twist.

2. Be Very Conscious on Where You Will Nail Your Fascia

We will not recommend you to nail your fascia close to the edge of the grain. The carpenter will usually angle the nail at around 1/2in apart from the fascia's edge and in the edge of the rafter and simply hope that it won't split. In case he has luck on his side, it will not split during the time he provided the service. However, the fascia board will soon split once it has been set into motion. It is advisable to nail it at the edge of the rafter trail or trusses. It may require too much efforts, but this can create a huge difference.

3. Using a Good Nail

Apart from the place where you will nail the fascia board, you should also pay attention on the quality of the nail. Galvanized and stainless-steel nail can greatly extend the longevity and functionality of your fascia. The extra cost is simply negligible, and the labor cost is the same.

4. Painting

Coating your fascia board with paint can greatly enhance the durability of your fascia. Protecting, especially the edge of the board, can increase their resistance against moisture. Water tends to stay longer on the end of the fascia. You can dip the edge of the fascia at excellent primer paint.

5. Check the Subfascia

Once you successfully remove the fascia, you should also take a look at the condition of your subfascia. In case you notice that it is rotting badly, you need to replace it before installing the new fascia board. Reframe it the same way that the original component has been framed.

Repairing your fascia board can be simple especially if you have the experience. In case you are not confident in completing the task, do not take any risk and hire the professionals.
